Every Picture Tells a Story Art Gallery presents the artworks appearances of two of Australia”™s most extraordinary artists, Shaun Tan and Emma Magenta. For almost 25 years, Every Picture has specialized in the very best of original illustration from children’s books. The “Tan + Magenta” exhibition will be on view January 16, 2011 – February 13, 2011. The opening reception and event, which is free & open to the public, will be held from 2-6pm on Sunday January 16, 2011.

Original paintings and drawings, prints and books by Tan and Magenta will be exhibited and available to purchase. A special video preview of a new animated series by Emma Magenta will be screened. The art of Australian illustrator Graeme Base will be featured, as well.

The opening reception will showcase Australian wines and food. The event will also include readings by very special Australian guests, as well as other surprises!

Melbourne-based Shaun Tan”™s books & stories include The Rabbits, The Red Tree, The Lost Thing, Tales from Outer Suburbia. His acclaimed wordless novel, The Arrival was the winner of the 2007 New York Times Best Illustrated Children”™s book award. Tan is also an acclaimed theatre designer and has also worked as a concept artist for films including Horton Hears a Who & Pixars Wall-E.

Emma Magenta is a Sydney artist whose books include The Perils of Magnificent Love, A Gorgeous Sense of Hope, The Origins of Lament and her most recent picture book, Orlando on a Thursday. She has twice collaborated with Australian actor, Toni Collette, on the children’s book, Planet Yawn and on an animated series for the ABC in Australia called The Gradual Demise of Phillipa Finch. The series, which will air in 2011, is written and illustrated by Emma and voiced by Toni Collette.

The exhibition Tan + Magenta is curated by LA-based Australian curator, Astrid Reed.

This event is open to everyone. Families with children are encouraged to attend.
