CTG offers FREE craft workshops

 

CENTER THEATRE GROUP OFFERS FREE WORKSHOPS
AT THE SHOP IN BOYLE HEIGHTS FROM MAY 27 THROUGH JUNE 24, 2017

Center Theatre Group will provide free workshops to community members at The Shop located at 2856 E. 11th Street in Boyle Heights, 90023. Center Theatre Group staff will teach crafting techniques with activities that range from puppet making to fabric marbling. Upcoming workshops are taking place in May and June.

The upcoming workshops are as follows:

  •   May 27 – Shibori: Teaching the ancient Japanese art of shibori. Shibori is thefolding, gathering, pleating and binding of cloth, which is then dipped in dye

    to create unique patterns.

  •   June 3 – Fabric marbling: Create a colorful silk piece using paint andhousehold tools.
  •   June 17 – Puppet making: Learn to craft puppets out of household items.
  •   June 24 – Kaleidoscope making: Make homemade kaleidoscopes, opticalinstruments that create a colorful, symmetrical pattern when rotated.

All workshops will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and are bilingual in English and

Spanish. The workshops are suitable for ages 15 and up. Snacks and beverages will be provided.

Center Theatre Group began its community programming at The Shop in the fall of 2013 with a pilot series of workshops and events that offered opportunities for Boyle Heights residents to express creativity, build community and connect the craft of theatre with their daily lives.

The workshops are part of Center Theatre Group’s Education and Community Partnerships department. Currently one of the most active theatre education programs in the country, Education and Community Partnerships reached more than 18,000 students, teachers and community members throughout Southern California in the 2015-2016 season. The department is dedicated to the development of artists, educators, community members and young people’s skills and creativity through the exploration of theatre, its literature, art and imagination.
