“Stanley Kubrick’s Sound Odyssey” – at the Disney Concert Hall

The live performances of music selections, paired with film clips from some of legendary director Stanley Kubrick’s most celebrated films, bring the music selected by the legendary director to life in a thrilling concert.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic has announced that Malcom McDowell will host Stanley Kubrick’s Sound Odyssey, featuring the LA Phil and Los Angeles Master Chorale led by conductor Jessica Cottis, in a program of music selections and accompanying clips from some of Kubrick’s most celebrated films, including 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Barry Lyndon, and Eyes Wide Shut.

Performances are Friday and Saturday, November 23 and 24, at 8pm, and Sunday, November 25, at 2pm, at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Stanley Kubrick’s Sound Odyssey is a tribute to the pioneering director and his groundbreaking use of music in film. Kubrick often rejected original scores in favor of existing or reworked renditions of classical compositions, and he used them so effectively that they’ve become shorthand for his entire style.
Malcolm McDowell is arguably among the most dynamic and inventive of world-class actors, yet also one capable of immense charm, humor, and poignancy. McDowell’s place in movie history was subsequently secured when Stanley Kubrick finally found the actor he was searching for to play the gleefully amoral Alex in A Clockwork Orange, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe; when McDowell himself conceived the idea for Mick Travis’ further adventures in Anderson’s Candide-like masterpiece, O Lucky Man!; and when he wooed Mary Steenburgen and defeated Jack the Ripper as the romantically inquisitive H.G. Wells in Time After Time.
Those legendary roles are among the ones that have endured with legions of filmgoers, while new fans have been won over by his tyrannical Soran (the destroyer of Capt. Kirk) in Star Trek: Generations and his Machiavellian Mr. Roarke in Fantasy Island. In summer of 2011, Malcolm starred in his own show, TNT’s Franklin & Bash, as Stanton Infeld and later that year in the Academy Award-winning silent film sensation, The Artist. In December of 2014, Malcolm was seen again as a series regular on Amazon’s Golden Globe award-winning show, Mozart in the Jungle. McDowell played Thomas, a seasoned conductor being forced into retirement by the arrival of hot shot new conductor Rodrigo, played by Gael Garcia Bernal.
