A special, free film event to coincide with the Playboy Jazz Festival is the Playboy Jazz on Film program, happening on Wednesday, June 8, at 7:30 pm.
Report by Pauline Adamek
For over thirty years the Playboy Jazz on Film program has presented the greatest names in jazz through rare and swinging film clips. This is the longest on-going such program worldwide and the tradition continues this June 8th with their partner, Ebony Repertory Theatre, at one of Los Angeles”™ brightest cultural destinations.
Program host and noted jazz archivist Mark Cantor will once again share a series of performances highlighting the most important, and sometimes forgotten, names in jazz. The Playboy Jazz Festival”™s annual “˜Jazz on Film”™ night will celebrate the legacy of jazz.
The event will be held in cooperation with the Ebony Repertory Theatre at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center on Washington Boulevard, on Wednesday evening, June 8th, at 7:30 p.m.
Known for his extensive collection of rare jazz films and documentaries, Cantor will share a series of rarely seen performances celebrating some of the most important as well as the sometimes forgotten names in jazz.
The Nate Holden Performing Arts Center was formerly the site of a popular Los Angeles playhouse, surrounded by the city”™s top jazz clubs during Los Angeles”™ golden era of jazz in the 50″²s and 60″²s in the heart of city. During that time, Mid-City Los Angeles (Washington Boulevard between La Brea and Crenshaw) was home to such legendary venues as the Parisian Room, The It Club, and the Hillcrest club, where many of the greatest names in jazz came to play on a regular basis.
Jazz on Film will feature archival footage of a variety of artists who appeared at these clubs, such as Thelonious Monk, Dexter Gordon and Miles Davis to name a few. There will also be film clips of performances by such notables as Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Louis Armstrong, Mel Tormè, Dinah Washington and more.
Jazz on Film is part of Playboy”™s free community event series held in conjunction with this year”™s annual Playboy Jazz Festival, set for June 11th and 12th at the world famous Hollywood Bowl.
The Nate Holden Performing Arts Center is located in the Mid-City area which was home to such legendary venues as The It Club, The Parisian Room and The Hillcrest Club. This is an annual favorite you won’t want to miss!
Seating is on a first come, first served basis. Seating is free, but tickets are required.
Tickets will be available from 12 Noon on June 8th, at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center Box Office.
Tickets are limited to four per person.
