Last chance to catch Intimate Opera Pasadena – Sunday

Looking for something to do this Sunday (tomorrow)?

Sunday August 21st is your last chance to catch to check out an encore presentation of Intimate Opera Pasadena’s (IOP’s) production of the brilliant and chilling short opera Suor Angelica by Puccini and Gilbert & Sullivan’s Trial by Jury in concert at the First Baptist Church in Old Pasadena. This will be a marvelous musical experience.

In Suor Angelica, Puccini’s ethereal music for the orchestra and chorus places us in the convent where Sister Angelica gradually emerges as the central character. The historic Chapel at First Baptist Church in Pasadena is the perfect setting for this magical opera.

The cast features the young singers who took part in IOP’s Summer Workshop, and once you hear them in full voice, you’ll understand why Artistic Director Stephanie Vlahos is so impressed by their talents.

Various productions staged this past Summer have provided a platform for these emerging artists, aged 16 to 28, from throughout Southern California who participated in the nurturing environment of IOP’s Summer Young Artist Program.

This Sunday’s showcase of the gifted young artists will have two sessions – one at 2pm and another at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20.00. Just show up at the door.

Parking is free – validation supplied.

Note:  these two Opera productions were originally mounted for OperaFusion, and were such a success that people requested more performances…and IOP obliged.

Background:

OperaFusion is a musical cocktail raised in toast to the vibrant, incredibly talented array of talented artists in our community,” says Vlahos. “Some are in the midst of major careers. Others are just embarking on one. But, at Intimate Opera Pasadena, we love to mix them together, shake things up a bit, and stir your soul.”

Additionally, Intimate Opera Pasadena would like to thank the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts for its generous support of OperaFusion.

The Intimate Opera of Pasadena is all about great performances through giving back. IOP is committed to the outreach of opera with productions that support and nurture the emerging, local opera singer by offering the invaluable opportunity of collaboration in performance with more seasoned, celebrated artists. In keeping with the sensibility of its new home at the Pasadena Playhouse, IOP’s productions seek to bridge the perceived gap between theater and opera by exploring the “intimate” proportions of live theater in opera. The result is a unique concept in performance that is magic for the performer and the community at large, galvanizing audiences from Pasadena, the San Gabriel Valley, and beyond with the humanity, relevance, and life-enhancing experience of opera.
