The nation’s oldest dance company – the Martha Graham Dance Company – turns 100 this year, and The Soraya kicks off the 3-year celebration just weeks after the international announcement of global activities. The early days of Graham’s life as a dancer were spent right here in Southern California, and so The Soraya ensures that Los Angeles plays a major role in the Martha Graham Dance Company’s centenary. While Graham herself is widely recognized as one of the most pivotal figures of the 20th century, the company is as vital as ever in the 21st century, cultivating an ongoing legacy of innovation and creativity that captures the spirit of our times.

For opening night, The Soraya presents a program that spans more than 100 years, from an early work Graham made in Los Angeles in 1915, to a new rendering of Agnes de Mille’s groundbreaking Rodeo, with updated scenery and a new bluegrass adaptation of the original Aaron Copland score. The Soraya premieres this new version, which will then tour internationally during the centenary’s first year with an Americana theme.

Since 2015, the Martha Graham Dance Company has had its West Coast home at The Soraya, and keeping with its tradition of presenting the Company with live music, The Soraya invites Wild Up to join for the fifth time, as well as fiddler Gabe Witcher who makes his Soraya debut.

Signature Series: Diavolo: Existencia

30 Years After the Northridge Earthquake, featuring Thana Alexa and Antonio Sanchez.

Gravity betrays you and the ground beneath your feet is no longer reliable. Then what happens next? That’s the inspiration for Existencia, a new piece created by Diavolo. A special event that brings to bear the company’s athleticism and unique brand of spectacle, as well as its humanity and grace. Joining the dancers onstage are drummer Antonio Sánchez and vocalist Thana Alexa. The jazz duo creates a new score and soundscape in collaboration with Diavolo, also inspired by the personal impacts of earthquakes on their families in Mexico City and Croatia.
