PAC LA presents “Photography Meets Sculpture” with Eve Schillo

PAC LA Brings Photography and Sculpture Into Focus with Special Preview by LACMA Curator Eve Schillo

The boundaries between photography and sculpture are more fluid than ever, and on June 10, art enthusiasts will have a unique opportunity to explore that evolving relationship with one of the field’s leading curators.

The Photographic Arts Council Los Angeles (PAC LA) will present Photography Meets Sculpture, a free public lecture by Eve Schillo, Associate Curator in the Wallis Annenberg Photography Department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. at the Beverly Hills Public LibraryRegister for *free* tickets here.

Held as part of PAC LA’s yearlong Year of Innovation programming, the event will offer an engaging look at how contemporary artists are blending photography, sculpture, and installation into dynamic hybrid forms that challenge traditional definitions of the medium.

A highlight of the evening will be Schillo’s exclusive preview of her forthcoming exhibition, Photography Meets Sculpture, which is scheduled to tour Southern California beginning in summer 2027 through LACMA’s Local Access initiative. The exhibition will spotlight contemporary women artists whose practices combine lens-based imagery with sculptural approaches, expanding both the material and conceptual possibilities of photography.

During the lecture, Schillo will examine the growing phenomenon of photo-hybridity and trace its roots to the groundbreaking 1970 exhibition Photography into Sculpture, organized by Peter Bunnell for The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). By revisiting this influential exhibition through a contemporary lens, Schillo will explore how today’s artists continue to push photography beyond the frame and into three-dimensional space.

The program aligns perfectly with PAC LA’s 2026 theme, Year of Innovation, which celebrates photography’s long history as a medium driven by experimentation, technological advancement, and creative reinvention. Through lectures, conversations, and public programs, the series investigates how artists, curators, and cultural institutions continue to redefine what photography can be.

Schillo brings a wealth of expertise to the discussion. As an Associate Curator at LACMA, she has organized exhibitions spanning photographic history and contemporary practice, including Mariana Yampolsky (2018), Golden Hour (2021–22), In the Now: Gender and Nation in Europe (2021), Before You Now: Capturing the Self in Portraiture (2024–25), and Nature on Notice: Contemporary Art and Ecology (2025). Her upcoming exhibition on photo-hybridity represents the next chapter in her exploration of photography’s expanding role in contemporary art.
