About the program:
In honor of America at 250, American Icons celebrates legendary innovators who have influenced American dance and music, Jerome Robbins, Igor Stravinsky, Paul Taylor, Burl Ives, David Lawrence and Melissa Barak.
Included in the program are two legendary American dancemakers, Jerome Robbins and Paul Taylor. Robbins’ The Cage takes the audience into an intense scene where a tribe of female insects prey on the male counterparts that enter their habitat. Premiering in 1951, The Cage stands till this day as a revolutionary work both in invention and abstract storytelling. Paul Taylor’s Dilly Dilly is also a masterclass in abstract storytelling where its cast of 11 dancers playfully frolic and romp to the famous tunes of American folk singer, Burl Ives.
Jerome Robbins’ The Cage takes us into an intense scene where a tribe of female insects prey on the male counterparts that enter their habitat. Premiering in 1951, The Cage continues to be a revolutionary work both in invention and abstract storytelling. Following the premiere, the New York Times wrote, “it is a tremendous little work, with the mark of genius upon it.”
If you missed the premiere of Artistic Director Melissa Barak’s smash hit Wavelength last season, this is your chance to see the encore. Set to a score by American composer David Lawrence, the ballet features a costume collaboration between luxury fashion house ETRO designer Marco De Vincenzo and LAB’s head costume designer, Chloée O’Hayon-Crosby.
Paul Taylor’s Dilly Dilly is another masterclass in abstract storytelling where dancers playfully frolic and romp to the famous tunes of American folk singer, Burl Ives. What does Dilly mean you ask? It’s simply short for “delightful.”
One of America’s most prolific modern dancemakers, Paul Taylor choreographed for Martha Graham in his early years before moving on to create his own distinctive style of modern dance. Los Angeles Ballet is the first company outside of Paul Taylor Dance to perform Dilly Dilly.
