Creative theatre director, noted for his unique contemporary stagings of classical and contemporary operas and plays, Peter Sellars is to direct the Los Angeles Philharmonic performances of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, Music and Artistic Director of the LA Phil.
For the first time, Gustavo Dudamel conducts the return of this remarkable production of Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde, directed by Peter Sellars with video by Bill Viola, one of America’s leading visual artists.
Matching Wagner’s 19th-century desire to expand what opera could be with 21st-century innovation, Viola’s and Sellars’ staging explores the psychological, spiritual, and elemental subtext of the story. This rare opportunity to see the Tristan Project features a globally celebrated cast, headlined by Michael Weinius and Miina-Liisa Värelä.
In the opera, Wagner tells the star-crossed tale of two doomed lovers, but it was his musical setting that caused a revolution. Beginning with the very first notes, including the famed “Tristan chord,” Wagner elicits an endless yearning that mirrors the tumultuous emotional worlds of our heroes, with an innovative harmonic approach that left an unavoidable impact on generations of composers.
The performances will include Bill Viola’s video. Sellars was the director of the LA Phil’s 2004 and 2007 presentations originally commissioned by the LA Phil of Tristan with the Viola video, and the opera was conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen.
Dudamel and the LA Phil are joined by the Los Angeles Master Chorale, led by Grant Gershon Artistic Director, and a cast headlined by tenor Michael Weinius and soprano Miina-Liisa Värelä.
Tristan und Isolde will be presented in Los Angeles in its entirety in two cycles of three performances each (one act per performance) December 9-11 and December 15-17, 2022.

About Tristan und Isolde:
Tristan und Isolde is an immense operatic poem, a song of love and death inspired by the medieval legend of “Tristan and Iseult” and the passion that Richard Wagner nurtured for Mathilde, the wife of his rich Zurich patron, Otto Wesendonck. In musical terms, the opera marks a turning point in Wagner’s works and indeed in the history of Western music for its audacious harmonies and the way in which the composer overlays different rhythms, thus creating a languishing and endlessly prolonged tension.
